Why are pumpkins used for Halloween?

Answer : There is an old Irish myth that explains why pumpkins are utilised for Halloween. According to the legend, Stingy Jack struck a pact with the devil to ensure that he would never enter hell by tricking him twice. But because of his deception, Jack was also denied entry to heaven after he passed away. He was destined to walk the world, his only light coming from a turnip he had carved out and used to light his way.

This myth was brought to America by Irish immigrants who discovered that pumpkins were easier to get by and easier to carve than turnips. In order to frighten away evil spirits on Halloween night, they started carving terrifying faces into pumpkins to form Jack-o’-lanterns. Pumpkin carving is still a widely-preferred Halloween activity today because to this custom.
